The Tongariro Alpine Crossing has only two seasons. Summer and winter. Shuttle only options apply when the track is clear from snow and ice. Once there is snow and ice on the track we no longer offer shuttle only options for safety reason.
Summer – shuttle only
It is very popular to self guide at this time of year with our map and information sheet to help you along the way, during the summer months the track is clear and well marked. Shuttle only options are the most popular. At this time of the year the side summits are safe to climb.
Winter – track safety
During the main part of winter when snow and ice cover the most dangerous sections of the track we offer you the opportunity to safely freedom hike to the most scenic parts of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing without entering the danger zone created by heavy snow, steep sheet ice, avalanche risk and poor weather. Guides are not required for this section of the track. (Please note that the Emerald Lakes are frozen over in winter and not visible). At this time of the year the side summits are not possible to climb.
Gear is organised on the bus in the morning. You must have your lunch and water organised before you come as there is no where to buy food or water on or around the track.
