How to Get to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is widely known as the best one-day hike in New Zealand - and there is no shortage of reasons why. Over 100,000 people walk its 20.2 km of volcanic terrain every year, drawn in by ancient lava flows, vivid crater lakes, and rugged peaks that make this trail so unique.

But before you get on your boots, there is one important logistical challenge to sort out: how to actually get there. The Crossing is a point-to-point hike, starting at Mangatepopo and finishing at Ketetahi, which are two completely different locations. Add in parking restrictions during peak season, and you will quickly realise that driving yourself is not quite as straightforward as it sounds.

This guide covers everything you need to know: where the Crossing is, how far it is from the main travel hubs, and the most practical way to get there and back without the headaches.

What is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing?

The Crossing is a 20.2 km one-way track through Tongariro National Park, a dual UNESCO World Heritage site with outstanding natural and cultural significance. The route winds up through the Mangatepopo Valley, climbs to Red Crater at 1,886 metres - the highest point on the track - then winds past the stunning Emerald Lakes and down through tussock plains to the Ketetahi car park.

Most hikers complete it in 6 to 8 hours, depending on their fitness level, weather, and how many photo stops you take (of which there will be plenty). While it's not as technical as some of New Zealand's other great walks, it's no walk in the park; there is 1200 metres of elevation gain and some steep, loose scree on the descent from Red Crater. As the drive is quite considerable from both Auckland and Wellington, Taupō is often the most popular base for the Crossing. It is close enough to make an early start easy, with plenty of accommodation and dining options for those spending time in the area.

There is also the Tongariro Holiday Park , located near the Ketetahi end of the track - this is a great option for those looking for a place to rest their head near the track, to maximise their hiking time.

The Parking Problem

The biggest catch for many first-timers completing the crossing is that during peak season (November to April), DOC (Department of Conservation) enforces a four-hour parking restriction at both trailhead car parks. Since the hike itself takes most hikers 6–8 hours, leaving your car at the start is not an option.

Even outside peak season, the point-to-point layout of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track creates a problem: if you drive to Mangatepopo Car Park, your car will not be at Ketetahi when you finish (and walking back is not an option). You would need two vehicles and two drivers doing a car shuffle, which is a lot of extra effort.

What is the Tongariro Crossing Track?

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a challenging 20.2km one-way trek that takes 6-8 hours to complete. The track passes over the volcanic terrain of the multi-cratered active volcano Mount Tongariro, passing the base of Mount Ngauruhoe.

The crossing is walked from Mangatepopo (1,120m altitude) to Ketetahi (760m altitude), meaning you start up higher in the first half of the trail, before hitting peak elevation and heading downhill for the latter part of the hike.

The track involves approximately 1196 meters of elevation change, with steep climbs, rocky descents, and diverse landscapes.

Stage 1: Mangatepopo Valley (Start to Soda Springs)

Distance: 4.5km
Time: 1.25 hours

Your journey begins at the Mangatepopo Road end, where your Tongariro shuttle will drop you off. The first section is fairly flat and well-maintained, with a boardwalk in damp areas. This gentle start eases you in, warming up your legs while you get an up close and personal look at the alpine vegetation of the valley.

What to expect in Mangatepopo Valley:

Marker poles line the track, and about 15 minutes from the start, the track to Whakapapa Village branches off to the right – stick to the main track and do not turn off here. Follow the signposts and your map.
Five minutes later, a side track leads to Mangatepopo Hut and public toilet facilities.
Ancient lava flows line the valley floor, showing a glimpse into an eventful past, and the landscape becomes increasingly barren as you start to climb.
Soda Springs marks the end of easy walking and the last toilet facilities before the South Crater.

Insider tip: The Soda Springs area is the "calm before the storm." This is your last chance to adjust your pack and layers before the serious climbing begins. Use the facilities here!

Stage 2: The Devil's Staircase (Soda Springs to South Crater)

Distance: 2km
Time: 1 hour

This is where the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track earns its reputation. The track increases in difficulty with a steady, sharp climb of approximately 350 meters up a rocky staircase to the South Crater.

What to expect at Devil's Staircase:

An intense incline up a well-formed track and staircase through rock terrain uphill - it's quite the test of fitness.
On clear days, you may catch views down the valley and across to the perfectly formed volcanic cone of Mount Taranaki in the distance.
Dramatic elevation gain that will test your physical and mental stamina, and the increasingly exposed terrain has less shelter from the wind.

Insider tip: Take regular, short 15-second breaks, pace yourself, and don't feel pressured by faster hikers - step aside where it's safe to do so. The views are worth stopping for, and there's no prize for speed on this track.

Stage 3: South Crater to Red Crater

Distance: 2km
Time: 45 minutes

After catching your breath after completing the aptly-named Devil's Staircase, you're rewarded with the surreal, flat moonscape of South Crater. Before too long, there's another challenging climb on an exposed, loose gravel ridge to Red Crater, the highest point of the crossing at 1,886 meters.

What to expect crossing South Crater and climbing to Red Crater:

A relatively flat stretch through South Crater's barren expanse - it feels like walking on another planet!
Mount Ngauruhoe (Lord of the Rings' Mount Doom) towers dramatically to your right.
The final ascent to Red Crater is the steepest and most exposed section of the entire track, with loose, unstable gravel underfoot.
Spectacular views over the Oturere Valley, Rangipo Desert, Kaimanawa Ranges, and down toward the Emerald Lakes.
Keep an eye out for the vivid red and brown volcanic rocks showing iron oxidation.

Insider tip: Hold onto your hat and secure loose items - this ridge can experience some of the strongest winds on the entire crossing, as South Crater is completely exposed with no shelter. At the base, assess the weather conditions. If you feel it is no longer safe to continue, then this is the turnaround point! Bonus tip: If it is not windy, the top of the Red Crater is a great spot to have lunch – this is due to the ground being warm due to thermal activity and of course the 360 degree views!

Stage 4: Red Crater to Emerald Lakes

Distance: 0.5km
Time: 15 minutes

Here you'll arrive at one of the most photographed locations in New Zealand! The steep descent on volcanic rock scree (loose rubble) to the vivid Emerald Lakes can cause this section to be very slippery - pay attention here and watch your footing.

What to expect descending to the Emerald Lakes:

Loose scree underfoot that can move quickly and easily - it requires a careful, controlled descent.
A steep drop that's tough on knees and requires careful foot placement.
Stunning views of the emerald-green lakes getting closer with each step - these lakes are fed by rain and melted snow and coloured by volcanic minerals.
Active steam vents and the distinctive smell of sulfur - a key sign of the thermal area.
These areas hold spiritual significance for the local iwi (tribe). Please stay on marked tracks and treat the area with respect – this means no eating or drinking around the lakes due to their sacred nature . The water is cold, acidic, and should not be approached.

Insider tip: Hiking poles are very helpful for this descent. Take small steps, lean back slightly and place your feet carefully - this is not the place to rush!

Stage 5: Emerald Lakes to Blue Lake

Distance: 1.3km
Time: 20 minutes

After taking in the iconic Emerald Lakes, the track follows around Central Crater before climbing to Blue Lake, a cold, freshwater lake that is tapu (sacred).

What to expect between Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake:

An easy flat walk through Central Crater, then a short sharp incline to the viewpoint of Blue Lake.
A naturally bright blue lake formed in an old volcanic vent, surrounded by the contrasting volcanic terrain.
Views back to Red Crater and across to Mount Ngauruhoe.
Again, the lake is sacred, and it is disrespectful to touch, enter, eat, or drink around its shores

Insider tip: This is your last major highlight before the long descent begins, so take time to appreciate the views and capture some photos.

Stage 6: Blue Lake to the Ketetahi Lookout

Distance: 2.5 km
Time: 1-1.5 hours

From Blue Lake, the track begins the descent toward the Ketetahi Lookout.

What to expect from Blue Lake to Ketetahi Lookout:

From the Blue Lake you start your gradual descent down the mountain side with views into the steaming, active Te Maari Crater and expansive, panoramic views.
Dramatic views out over Mount Pihanga, Lake Rotoaira, and across to Lake Taupō in good weather.
The former Ketetahi Shelter site with public toilet facilities (the actual shelter was removed after the 2012 volcanic eruption).

Insider tip: This section marks the beginning of your descent off the volcanic plateau. Take in the views while you can, as you'll soon enter the bush where the landscape changes dramatically.

Stage 7: Ketetahi Lookout to Ketetahi Car Park

Distance: 6.5 km
Time: 2 hours

The final stage of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a steady descent from the alpine environment, first through tussock and then through native bush down to the Ketetahi Car Park.

What to expect on the descent to Ketetahi Car Park:

Continued descent through golden tussock slopes with views of distant lakes.
The track enters the bush line and drops steeply through native forest - quite the contrast to the barren and rocky terrain above.
Cool native forest provides welcome shade after hours in exposed alpine terrain.
The final stretch on forest paths to the exit by Ketetahi Car Park.
And finally.... Relief and satisfaction at completing one of New Zealand's greatest day walks!

Insider tip: This section can feel long, and your legs and feet will be tired after hours of hiking. The descent is hard on knees and toes, so take your time and use poles if you have them - there's no need to rush and risk injury in these final kilometres.

On Saturday, 8 November 2025, a fire started in Tongariro National Park and
burnt almost 3000ha of vegetation over multiple days.

About the Wildfire

The smoke could be seen billowing from as far as Taupō.
This fire caused the changed landscape you will see as we drive to the start of the track.
For those visitors who have done this walk or visited the park in the past, it won’t look quite like it did before. From the scorch marks on the pou Te Ririo, to the blackened landscape, it’s a sobering view.
As of Monday, November 17th, we’re so happy the track is open , and we’re inviting people to visit respectfully, to come back with a sense of awe and compassion for this place.
You will see Te Ririo once we get to the start of the trail. Te Ririo serves as a kaitiaki, or guardian, for those who walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Messages

Please keep to the tracks at all time as the burnt area is subject to a restorative rāhui, which allows time and space for the land to be naturally restored. We know there will be a temptation to get closer to where the fire was, but it is really important to stick to the tracks and let this area heal.
You will notice the start of the track and Mangatepopo Hut, around a kilometre into your journey, were spared by the fire – this was thanks to the amazing efforts of those fighting the fire, but also a little bit of good luck – and the protection of Te Ririo!

Park Closures

Initial assessments are that the Mangatepopo (Ditch) Track - the first day of the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk has been significantly impacted and will need significant investment before it is opened again.
Mangatepopo Road and the car park have suffered some damage and the car park is currently unsafe to use. While the car park is assessed and repairs are arranged, transport to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing will be limited to shuttle drop-offs and pick-ups for safety reasons.
Private cars are not allowed to enter Mangatepopo Road.

Tongariro National Park Biodiversity

The Tongariro National Park is home to alpine and sub alpine shrub-lands, scrub, tussock grasslands and alpine herb fields.
The fire has been devastating and burned almost 3000 hectares, which will have a significant impact on biodiversity.
It is still too early to speak to the long-term effects to ecosystems, flora and fauna at place but what we can say is that with a fire of this magnitude, we will see significant damage to the biodiversity in the area.
The many native plants and animals found here are not unique to Tongariro (although more than 80% are unique to New Zealand), but the way they interact with each other within a volcanic landscape are.
We expect the fire will be devastating for species like the at-risk fern birds and pipits and the many invertebrate species found in the area like short-horned grasshopper (Sigaus pilifer), moths, butterflies (e.g. North Island Boulder Copper) and beetles, and the orchid species present, many of which are presently flowering.
Unfortunately, we expect some weeds will grow back faster than natives. Many weed species are wind dispersed, fire adapted, have long-lived seeds and large seed banks - suckers and shoots resprout from burnt stumps.
We can expect to see weeds like heather, broom, gorse and wilding conifers thriving post-fire but the Department of Conservation is working with Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro to develop a restoration plan to try to knock out as many of these weed plants from adjoining land as quickly as possible.
One of the key characteristics of this ecosystem is its ability to regenerate, with the vegetation in the park having a history of volcanism and fire.
Restoration is likely to involve protecting the area from reinvading weeds, while allowing the naturally resilient vegetation to recover on its own.
Initial vegetation recovery will be dominated by native red tussock which represents a natural, early ecosystem state following significant disturbance.
In time, and with ongoing weed and browser control, native woody species will establish (for example hebe, kānuka, mānuka). Halls tōtara and mountain toatoa are dispersed by birds and will establish much later.
Fortunately, the fire has not impacted the significant brown kiwi population nearby across the highway in Tongariro Forest.
There are the records of kiwi occasionally found in the affected area but it is not considered to be a large or significant population.

How can visitors help the wildfire recovery?

To help the environment recover as quickly as possible we are asking people to stay out of the affected area, except for tracks and facilities DOC has reopened.
DOC will conduct a full biodiversity impact assessment, from this, there will likely be opportunities for people to be involved in the long-term recovery of the whenua.

Although the path to recovery is long, we look forward to welcoming more visitors from around the world to explore this special part of Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Lady Knox Geyser is also a must-see, putting on a show every morning at 10:15am sharp, as it shoots a stream of steam and water high into the air as it erupts. Here you can easily while away a couple of hours taking in the fascinating sights.

No trip to Lake Taupō is complete without a leisurely cruise to the iconic Māori Rock Carvings. Only accessible by water, this relaxing experience takes you across the crystal-clear expanse of New Zealand’s largest lake (a massive 616 square kilometres!) while you sit back with a drink in hand and soak in the scenery.

We’ll be the first to admit—we’re big fans of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (it is, after all, what we spend half the year taking visitors to!).

But while the Crossing is often top of the list for visitors when visiting the central North Island, it’s not always accessible. Seasonal closures, poor weather, or limited time can mean it’s not the right option on the day.

The good news? There are plenty of other amazing walks in and around Tongariro National Park . From short scenic loops to full-day hikes, you’ll still get a taste of the park’s mesmerising landscapes, cultural stories, and volcanic features—without always needing to commit to the full 19.4km adventure.

Whether you’re after a leg stretch or a serious hike, here’s our guide to the best walks in Tongariro National Park .

Short Walks

There are a number of easy walking trails throughout the National Park, which can often be overlooked but are no less impressive. These trails are perfect if you’re short on time or energy, or are recovering from doing the Tongariro Crossing, and want to take in some of the park’s iconic sights.

Taranaki Falls Track

Loop | 6km | 2 hours

One of our top picks for a taste of Tongariro! This easy track starts from Whakapapa Village, just below the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre, winds through alpine forest and tussock to a spectacular 20-metre waterfall tumbling over an ancient lava flow.

The track offers stunning views of Mount Ngāuruhoe and the rugged peaks of Tongariro and Pukekaikiore on a clear day. Starting through tussock and alpine shrublands, the lower track provides a more sheltered path, especially welcome on windy days. You'll wander past beech forests, cross the Wairere Stream, and spot small native birds.

Taranaki Falls plunges dramatically over a 15,000-year-old andesite lava flow from Mount Ruapehu — a reminder of the region’s volcanic history. From the falls, the upper track climbs gradually, crossing red tussock, and showing exposed layers of ash and pumice, before looping back to the village via the historic Waihohonu horse trail.

Lake Rotopounamu Track

Loop | 5km | 1.5 hours

Tucked in the slopes of Mt Pihanga, this forested trail loops around the peaceful, green-hued Lake Rotopounamu. Just off SH47, about 11km from Tūrangi, the walk begins opposite the car park near Te Ponanga Saddle. The track gently climbs before splitting into a loop — both directions take you through lush native forest, past quiet beaches perfect for a rest, a swim, or a spot of birdwatching. With shaded paths, peaceful outlooks and a refreshing lake to swim in, it's the perfect loop if you're looking for a quiet spot to stretch your legs.

Mangatepopo to Soda Springs

Return | 6km | 2 hours

This is the first section of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and a great taster if you’re not doing the full hike. Starting from the Mangatepopo car park (13.4km from Whakapapa Village), the track follows the Mangatepopo Stream through an impressive valley. Along the way, you’ll pass ancient lava flows and get epic views of Mt Ngāuruhoe. At the far end of the valley, Soda Springs tumbles from the rocks, creating an oasis where yellow buttercups and white foxgloves bloom in summer. It’s the perfect turnaround point before the trail steepens.

Please note : This track is best done during the shoulder and summer season (between October and April), to avoid the snow in the winter season, and a 4-hour parking limit applies from Labour Weekend to May.

Silica Rapids Track

Loop | 7km | 2.5 hours

Though around the 7km mark, this walk packs in a lot of variety. Think golden tussock flats, alpine wetlands, and colourful mineral terraces — with the incredible Silica Rapids as the highlight.

Also starting near the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre, the track weaves through beech forest before opening up to bubbling streams with gold-toned beds. As you climb gently through swampy boardwalk sections and red tussock flats, keep an eye out for kōura (freshwater crayfish) in the ponds, and native birds among the trees.

Further along, the creamy-white terraces of the Silica Rapids come into view. Formed as mineral-rich waters emerge from lava cliffs, the stream bed here is coated in alumino-silicate deposits, creating a fascinating sight. Finally, the trail climbs gently through tussock, eventually meeting Bruce Road with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape as your reward.

Longer Walks (and Alternatives to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing)

If you’re looking for a more active day out these lesser-known hikes are excellent options. If the full Crossing is closed or not on the cards, these are also excellent alternatives that, although aren't as far, still offer epic volcanic views and an all-day hiking experience.

Tama Lakes Track

Return | 17km | 5–6 hours

This track begins from Whakapapa Village, this well-formed day hike takes you past Taranaki Falls and on toward the stunning Tama Lakes—two ancient craters filled with water. The lower lake sits in a wide basin, while a short, steep climb rewards you with sweeping views of the upper lake and the towering peaks of Ruapehu and Ngāuruhoe. It’s a fantastic alternative when the Tongariro Alpine Crossing isn't on the cards. Be prepared for strong winds and cooler temps at the Tama Saddle—windproof layers are strongly recommended.

Whakapapaiti Valley Track

Loop | 16km | 5–6 hours

This lesser-known trail offers incredible views of Mt Ruapehu and a chance to explore a different side of the park. It’s quieter, scenic, and still gives you that remote wilderness feel.

The track winds through open tussocklands, alpine wetlands, and patches of beech forest, with stunning views of Mt Ruapehu throughout. You'll follow the Whakapapaiti Stream up the valley, cross a few unbridged streams, and pass through areas shaped by volcanic activity and glacial erosion. It’s a remote, rewarding loop that showcases a more peaceful and less-travelled side of the park. Please note: There are river crossings, so check the Tongariro weather conditions before setting out.

Tupapakurua Falls

Return | 11km | 4-5 hours

Another underrated gem near National Park Village, this track is one of the more challenging day hikes in the area, but it's well worth the effort!

You'll start with an easy 20-minute stroll along Fishers Road to the Taranaki Lookout, where you might be lucky to view Mt Taranaki on a clear day. From there, the trail turns into a true backcountry adventure. It follows a ridge before dropping steeply into a stream valley, winding past an impressive native forest made of towering rimu, tōtara, tawa and miro.

After climbing out of the valley, you’ll reach a scenic viewpoint overlooking the falls. Recent upgrades by locals and DOC have made access easier, but this is still a rugged track that requires good preparation and a decent level of fitness.

While Tongariro National Park has an incredible range of hikes, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is still our favourite and for good reason. As one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, it's a spectacular journey through Mars-like terrain and dramatic volcanic landscapes. The growth of the business started slowly, and then rapidly increased from there. Starting with a single bus and a Pajero to a fleet of 12 buses pre-COVID, by this time, the business had seen immense changes in tourism trends.

The most apparent being that travellers were seeking more independence and to hike with no time limit. Cue the introduction of the flexible Ketetahi one-way shuttle , which changed the experience for hikers, and remains to be the most popular option today! This service proved pivotal during the pandemic, allowing us to cater to locals with their own cars who only needed transport for part of the trip.

But this wasn’t the only way COVID forced us to adapt. With the introduction of non-contact systems, we streamlined our operations, implementing online booking and communication tools. When the eruption occurred while we were away, we adapted by offering an alternative hike from the Desert Road until the crossing reopened. During COVID, we downsized to focus on local shuttles, using the time to streamline our business.

Mandy's diagnosis with multiple myeloma was another significant moment, but the timing couldn't have been better. Finding out during the pandemic allowed Mandy to focus on her health and gave her a new outlook on life, which has influenced our business approach—now, we focus on simplicity, clear communication, and ensuring all our visitors feel safe and welcomed.

What Sustainability Initiatives Do You Incorporate and How Do You Encourage Visitors to Reduce Their Environmental Impact?

When we are efficient with our scheduling, we are being sustainable as more users of our transport means more cars off the road. How to Prepare for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of New Zealand’s most incredible day hikes. An 8-hour journey taking adventurers through an impressive volcanic alpine landscape featuring vivid emerald lakes, steaming vents, and stunning views.

Although over 100,000 hikers, ranging from novices to experienced trekkers, complete the 20.2km crossing each year, its varied terrain and unpredictable weather means preparation is essential.

1. Do Your Research On The Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Crossing lies within New Zealand's oldest national park, Tongariro National Park, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its dramatic scenery and mars-like surroundings. We recommend you thoroughly research the crossing so that you are well prepared, have selected the right trip and your transport is organised.

This guide ensures you know exactly what to expect, every step of the way. Here are the key phases of the hike:

Mangatepopo Valley: The challenging trip begins at the Mangatepopo Road trailhead and travels through the Mangatepopo Valley. This first section is relatively flat on a well-marked track, making it a great way to ease you in.
Soda Springs: Next up is Soda Springs, which takes you to a well-known section called "Devil's Staircase." A steep climb takes you to 1,600 metres above sea level, with unsteady terrain shaped by old lava flows. The view here down to the valley is incredible, especially on a clear day!
South Crater: After completing your first few hours, you'll reach a much-appreciated flat stretch before the next gradual climb, this time to the Red Crater.
Red Crater: Be prepared for a challenging climb to the highest point of the crossing, where you can expect colder temperatures and high winds. As you pass around the Red Crater, you’ll be granted incredible views of the rugged landscape, coloured by iron-rich soil.
Emerald Lakes: After reaching the peak, a steep descent follows, due to a slope of loose volcanic rock. Here, the vivid turquoise and emerald lakes showcase unnatural-looking colours, caused by minerals from surrounding rock, making for some of the crossing’s most iconic photos.
Central Crater: After the Emerald Lakes, the trail flattens again as you pass through the expansive Central Crater. This is also where the trail splits off to the Tongariro Northern Circuit, a 3-4 day trek. There is significant geothermal activity creates extremely hot steam and can cause severe burns so it's important you stay on the trail.
Blue Lake: A short climb leads you to the Blue Lake, a cold acidic lake filled with mineral-rich, crystal-clear water. This sacred lake offers a final splash of colour and serenity before you begin the descent.
Ketetahi Hut: From Blue Lake, the track begins a steady down toward the Ketetahi Hut. This sheltered spot offers a great place to rest and enjoy the views before the final stretch through native bush and down to the Ketetahi Car Park.

2. Packing Essentials for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

It is well-known that New Zealand can experience all four seasons in a day, so it's important to be prepared for your hike, year-round.

Packing the right gear can make all the difference so we’ve put together a Tongariro packing list to help you prepare:

Clothing Layers: Dress in layers to stay comfortable as temperatures change throughout the day. Include a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm mid-layer (like fleece or down), and a waterproof, wind-resistant outer layer to protect against the wind and rain. It's better to take a layer off, than not be able to put something else on!
Sturdy Footwear: The terrain can be very rocky and uneven, so wearing hiking boots with good ankle support and a solid grip will be essential for your hiking experience. You may also like to bring hiking poles for extra stability.
Food and Water: Bring at least 2–3 litres of water (it's best to bring more than you think you'll need) especially if you’re hiking in the summer months. High-energy snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, and protein bars are ideal for refuelling along the way. Don't forget to pack a tasty lunch to revive you at the halfway mark!
Toilet Paper & Hand Sanitiser: Whilst it may sound silly, as there are restrooms every 1-2 hours along the trail, you never know quite what amenities are waiting for you so it's best to be safe than sorry.
Sun Protection: The altitude and lack of shade mean the UV rays can be extremely intense, especially in New Zealand. Make sure to pack (and wear!) SPF 50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to help protect yourself.
Navigation and Safety Gear: Although this is a well-marked and popular hike, we do provide a map as they can be useful to have on hand in case of emergencies. If you'd like to bring your own personal navigatino device, feel free to do so. Also, pack a small first aid kit with items like bandages, antiseptic, pain relief and blister care.

3. Plan Your Logistics Ahead Of Time

Planning how you will get to the track is important. Due to the popularity of the hike, it's not as easy as arriving on the day of your hike the day and setting off. Here are the essential tips to consider and get organised.

Book a Shuttle in Advance

As parking space at the Mangatepopo trailhead Car Park is very limited, plus has a 4-hour time restriction, we recommend booking a shuttle that allows you to hike the crossing in one direction and make logistics hassle-free. At Tongariro Expeditions, we offer one-way and return shuttle services to make the logistics of getting to the hike seamless and stress-free.

One-Way Tongariro Shuttles

If you self-drive, our one-way Ketetahi shuttle will be perfect for you. Drive to the free Ketetahi Park n Ride at the end of the Tongariro Crossing, and catch one of our three morning shuttles which bring you to the start of the trailhead. This means you can hike at your own pace, and walk straight back to your car, without worrying about missing a shuttle back to your car park. Travelling with your family, or a large group? We've got various options for shuttle services just for you too!

Return Tongariro Shuttles

If you're staying in neighbouring Lake Taupō, Turangi or even the Tongariro Holiday Park, we offer return shuttles to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing . These services pick you up from selected accommodations, drop you at the start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track, and meet you at the end of the trail to return you to your transport or accommodation.

We recommend that you reserve your shuttle ahead of time, especially during peak season, to avoid missing out on your preferred date!

Complete the DOC Entry Form

Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro and the Department of Conservation (DOC) aim to ensure the Tongariro Alpine Crossing remains sustainable, safe, and respectful of its cultural significance while protecting its delicate environment.

To address the issues caused by increasing visitor numbers and environmental damage, you must now complete the Department of Conservation (DOC) entry form in preparation for the date of your alpine hike. Follow Shuttle Instructions

Once your shuttle is booked and your DOC form is filled out, it's important to review the shuttle instructions provided by Tongariro Expeditions a day before your hike. The provided information includes pick-up locations and timing, to ensure a smooth start to your day. It's also important to plan to arrive at the designated pick-up spot early, as the shuttles will not wait for you if you have parked in the wrong place or turn up late.

4. Check the Weather and Be Ready to Adapt

The alpine environment of the Tongariro Crossing is known for its rapidly changing weather conditions. Even in the warmer months, the sunshine can quickly give way to strong winds, rain and fog. Preparing for all possible weather scenarios is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Monitor Weather Forecasts

Begin checking the weather forecast a few days before your hike, monitoring conditions like wind speeds, visibility, and temperature, as each can significantly impact your safety on the trail.

At Tongariro Expeditions we also closely monitor the weather at the Tongariro Crossing updating our website daily to ensure everyone is aware of the weather conditions and confirm the scheduled shuttles are going ahead and the required check-in time.

If the forecast shows extreme conditions, we will cancel our Tongariro shuttles, either the day before or sometimes even the morning of your departure. It is very important you monitor the weather forecast before you set off. We take safety very seriously and using our extensive experience, we can't stress hard enough it's important to monitor weather conditions.

Should you wish to change your travel day due to adverse forecasted weather, we offer fully transferable bookings. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to change.

Understand Your Limits and The Weather

Alpine weather can shift quickly, and fog, rain, or snow can make the trail treacherous. Although we do our best to read the weather situation as best as possible, the weather can quickly change while you are doing your Tongariro trek.

To ensure you are prepared and know what to do the map we provide you has a turnaround location. If you reach the turnaround point the weather is no good, you would call us and let us know that you have turned around, so we can pick you up at the start of the track. If you’re ever unsure or uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to turn back—your safety is the priority.

Covid changed the world but cancer changed our lives

The C Word!

First there were whispers of this disease in China. We thought there might be a few changes to this market for us. Then there was panicked talk of world wide spread... finally covid arrived in NZ.

Our response was swift. We knew this was going to be something we have never faced before.

We were lucky to have a firewood business that we were able to move most of our staff to until they found other employment. Over the year that followed we were able to sell most of our buses and move all of our communications to online bookings only. The winter passed with us just focussing on firewood. As the first covid summer approached we had to decide whether to continue to operate the Tongariro Alpine Crossing shuttles or to hibernate or close forever.

In New Zealand the borders were closed for two seasons. There was enough interest from locals to run our Ketetahi one way shuttles only. New Zealanders like the freedom this option provides. All return shuttles stopped. We only had one or two small buses running in the morning only. It was actually a relaxing time that gave us an opportunity to rethink our future. Then another c word hit!

CANCER... worst news, best timing! I got diagnosed with Multiple myeloma in January 2021.

Tongariro Expeditions was now a small little business, easy to manage and all no contact. I was able to continue running it while going through treatment.

We had loyal drivers that continued to drive for us so that me and Jared could go away and focus on resting and enjoying this beautiful country.

Jared and myself, Mandy, have been running Tongariro Expeditions since 1997. The tourism landscape has changed a lot since then. Our small little business grew and grew and we were left running to keep up with it. Covid offered a chance to stop running and to take stock of how we want our lives to be.

Now that the borders are open again and the business is growing again, we have kept some of the lessons we learnt. You will notice we do not have a phone line. We encourage emails as the main communication platform. This is so that we do not have to be answering phones all day long. All bookings are online, this saves all the paper work of the past. We have a cap on numbers, this is being imposed by DOC and local Iwi but we are fully in support of it. It's better for the environment, our visitors and the over all experience.

We love what we do and we are excited to welcome everyone back again. I am well again but much much wiser.

Is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing the best Great Walk in New Zealand?

We reckon so! 19.4 kilometres of solidified volcanic lava flows, other-worldly colours, active fumaroles, sacred lakes and views, views, views, we loved it.

As relatively experienced walkers, we have been lucky enough to complete a few pretty epic walks and hikes across Australasia, yet each new adventure, long or short still brings a bit of apprehension and a load of excitement.

We completed the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on the 16th April 2023, not long after this date snow covers the ancient mountains and landscape, requiring alpine climbing skills and usually a guide!

Jumping onto tongariroexpeditions.com we went straight to there ‘Plan Ahead’ section, which offers oodles of great tips of what to wear for the Tongariro Crossing , take with you, because no matter how experienced you are, its always good to ask the locals and with over 20 experience on the mountains of the Central Plateau, this lot are definitely locals!

The booking process with Tongariro Expeditions was so easy, and what we really liked was the communication prior to our hike day. The weather in Tongariro National Park is forever changing and can be very dramatic and dangerous, so receiving the email titled ‘All Go!’ was a welcome relief!

We chose the Ketetahi shuttle service that Tongariro Expeditions, offering a one-way shuttle from your vehicle at the end of the hike to the start of the hike in the morning. By hiking your way back to your car, there is no time limit to your hike, which is great as we wanted to take our sweet time, and no need to wait for a bus once you’ve reached the end. It’s just a short stint on the shuttle with other likeminded folk raring to do the Crossing and the friendly shuttle driver providing info, maps and a few jokes!

The Crossing - One could go on and on for pages, and pages about actually doing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, about the astonishing scenery, ever changing landscapes, the spiritual vibe a place like this immerses you in, but no, find out for yourself. The walk took us approximately 8 hours, with plenty of selfie-stops, ‘second breakfast’ and of course ‘luncheon’.

Don’t concern yourself with the pace of others around you, for many this is a once in a lifetime experience, so take it all in. But be prepared, we witnessed scorching sunshine, strong icy winds and overcast tempting a down pour, and when you think you’re at the end of this magnificent must do walk, you’re not. So plenty of rest the night before.

As we’re in our camper-van and members of the NZMCA (New Zealand Motorhome Association) we stayed at one of their Parks just up the way in Tūrangi, there are many, many other accommodation and camping options available.

We plan to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing again, perhaps next year. We’ll be sure to contact Tongariro Expeditions again, for a smooth and informative introduction to now our favourite great walk this magical country has to offer Ngā manaakitanga.

Now, how does it work?

1. Book Your Ketetahi Park N Ride Shuttle Online

Our Park N Ride Ketetahi shuttle service for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing can be booked online, offering departure times of 6:30am, 7:30am and 8:30am. Select your preferred time and complete our simple booking process to reserve your place. Also don't forget to complete your DOC entry form. This is to help manage daily visitors and you only need one form per group. This can be completed here .

2. Bring Your Own Vehicle

This service sees you drive your car to the finishing point of the Tongariro Crossing at Ketetahi car park—no need to arrange transport from your accommodation! Travel in the comfort of your own vehicle, enjoying your coffee or breakfast on the way if you wish.

There is ample space for parking at Ketetahi—the end point of the track. Approximately 250 vehicles are permitted to park all day on the side of State Highway 46, offering plenty of options for our Park N Ride customers—just avoid any areas with ‘no parking’ signs! The main Ketetahi carpark can also accommodate 35 vehicles, however a four-hour limit applies. In the highly unlikely event that all parks are taken, there is an overflow car park up the road that will be opened. Early starters will have the best chance of securing a car park closest to the exit point of the track.

To allow plenty of time and a stress-free experience, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your designated pick up time. Once you’ve parked your car, gathered your belongings and locked up, walk to our Tongariro Expeditions check-in van which is parked across the road from the entrance to the Ketetahi carpark. We’ll give you a map and information sheet to check out while you wait for the bus to collect you.

After many (enjoyable!) hours of hiking, you’ll be pleased to find your own familiar and comfortable vehicle waiting for you at the other end. Simply walk out to the main road where you parked your car. Depart in your own time, with no need to wait for another bus or shuttle to collect you and drop you at your accommodation. Debrief with your companion, hit the nearest drive-thru, wind down by listening to some music or start planning your next adventure!

The Tongariro National Park stands as one of the world's most unique protected areas, holding the prestigious dual UNESCO World Heritage status for both its natural and cultural significance.

The Cultural Heritage of Tongariro

Tongariro National Park was first recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990 for its cultural, historical or environmental significance, making it just one of three areas of New Zealand to be recognised. The mountains of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, and Ruapehu hold deep spiritual importance to the local Māori tribes, particularly Ngāti Tūwharetoa.

The area represents the spiritual connection between the community and the environment, embodying the Māori cultural identity. This cultural recognition acknowledges the mountains as tribal ancestors and sacred peaks that have been central to Māori life for centuries.

The Gift of Tongariro

The Day I Conquered the Crossing

The Tongariro Crossing is one for the bucket list and it was about time I ticked it off. Not only was this going to be a physical test, one I had prepared for but also a mental and spiritual challenge.

We couldn’t have asked for a more pristine day; the skies were a beautiful clear. However, as we proceeded nothing had prepared me for the burning feeling in my chest or my shaking legs and aching knees. These unusual feelings were diminished when I saw the beauty, it was rewarding in ways no words could describe but it was my character that got me through the hardest of parts. When taking a step, a breath, a rest I would remember this beautiful quote to motivate me:

Aim for the highest cloud, so that if you miss it, you will still land on a lofty mountain.
Whaia te iti kahuranga kit e tuahu koe me he maunga teitei.

As the walk continued and conditions changed, we were about to embark on a long steep climb on ice. The views were glorious but terrifying and the idea of taking the next step was daunting. I took a breath as I prepared myself for that brave first step onto the ice, while internally I was flip flopping between I can do this and I can’t do this. I channelled my inner meditation tape . . . .
‘Okay Mandy, now relax, you can do this. Just one foot in front of the other and you will climb a mountain. Remember to breathe, relax. Look around at where you are, relax. Don’t look up at the struggle, glimpse back at the triumph’

An hour into the hike I realised I was so locked into my internal dialogue and had forgotten to breathe, drink and eat. My first bite to eat was a mandarin. I hate fruit. But the taste of the citrus sweet juice was heaven, this was the most divine mandarin in the entire world. The intense juicy flesh put my taste buds into a tailspin. The flavours were enhanced, the textures heightened and the colour so vibrant. The satisfaction of this tiny morsel hit me like an exotic dream, providing me brief relief while settled in the icy landscape.

We reached the top and the views were spectacular. Not a cloud in the sky and we could see for miles. With only a few minor hurdles my mind had got me through the challenge. I took a breath and took in the beauty that surrounded us. I did it! Conquering the Tongariro Crossing was truly an extraordinary experience.
