Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro and DOC want to make sure the experience of walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is sustainable and safe, respects the cultural significance of the area and protects the fragile environment. Visitor numbers are putting consistent pressure on the conservation and cultural values of the area, as well as the infrastructure. These pressures include congestion, waste management, environmental damage and lack of respect for the cultural significance of Tongariro. By better managing these challenges we will better protect Tongariro for future generations. DOC will be implementing a range of changes to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the coming years. Our aim is to manage the pressures and strengthen cultural and heritage values in the area.
