When you are booking your Tongariro shuttle don't forget to book your DOC pass.
Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro and the Department of Conservation (DOC) are working together to ensure the Tongariro Alpine Crossing remains a safe, sustainable, and culturally respectful experience for all.
Increasing visitor numbers are placing ongoing pressure on the area’s cultural and environmental values, as well as its infrastructure. Key challenges include congestion, waste management, environmental damage, and a lack of awareness or respect for the cultural significance of Tongariro.
To help address these issues and protect this treasured landscape for future generations, DOC will be introducing a number of changes to how the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is managed in the coming years. These efforts will help preserve the natural environment while strengthening the cultural and heritage values of the area.
The first of these changes is the DOC pass, a mandatory form when hiking The Crossing, to allow visitor numbers to be monitored and kept under control.
You can complete the form online and only need to complete one booking per group. You will need a contact phone number, email address and the name of your group leader. The group leader will receive the booking receipt and necessary information on behalf of the group.
