Taupō to Tongariro Return Shuttle
The Taupō return shuttle picks you up from Central Taupō and drops you at the Tongariro Alpine Crossing trailhead in Mangatepopo. We will then pick you up in the afternoon for the return journey back to Taupō.
Taupō Shuttle to and from the Tongariro Crossing
This Tongariro Crossing shuttle service picks you up from central Taupo at 5:15am. If you are staying in the town centre, we will collect you directly from your Taupo accommodation. If you are staying outside of our pick up area, we will meet you at the Taupo iSite on Tongariro St for collection.
The journey takes 1h 22 minutes and gets you to Mangatepopo by 7am. This service allows for up to 8 hours to complete the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It takes most people between 6-8 hours and most people are off the track by 2:30pm.
Pick up and departure time for the return journey in the afternoon is 3:00pm. However, if everyone has finished the track and checked in early, the shuttle back to Taupo will leave early too. Please note that you must be off the track before 3pm - if you are worried about not making it back in time you may like to consider doing our one-way Tongariro Park & Ride option.
We then get you back to Taupo by 4:30pm so you can have a relaxing afternoon.
Being in Taupo means you can enjoy a hot soak, your choice of a wide range of places to enjoy dinner or a drink as you watch the sunset over the mountain you just climbed.
Are there One Way Shuttles from Taupo to Mangatepopo?
- We specialise in transporting people for the one day Tongariro Alpine Crossing. We do not offer bespoke one way shuttles. If you require a one way shuttle from eg Taupo to Mangatepopo, you would need to book our Taupo return shuttle and pay full price. If you then need a shuttle from Ketetahi to Taupo a few days later, you book another return shuttle for that day and put Ketetahi 3pm in the pick up location.

Taupō Return Shuttle FAQs
Where can I be picked up from in Taupo?
We pick up from locations in the CBD and along the lakefront on the way to the mountain – this also includes pick up from Lake Taupo Resort and the Hilton.
We do not pick up north of Taupo including Nukuhau, Acacia Bay, Kinloch and Wairakei.
If you are staying out of our pickup zone we can pick up from Taupo Information Centre, where there is all day parking around the back.
What happens if I finish after the last shuttle?
If you miss our last afternoon bus at 3pm, you will then need to find alternative transport back. This information is given on our map and information sheet. Please note that after hours shuttles do come at an extra cost.
Where do I wait for pick-up at the end of the hike?
All return shuttles meet at the Ketetahi Car Park at the end of the track – you’ll easily spot our shuttle when it pulls in. There are also bathrooms and shade here while you wait.What time does the afternoon shuttle leave, and how long will I wait?
The return shuttle leaves between 2- 3pm – as we provide about 8 hours to complete the track, most people finish within 6-8 hours, with most people off the track by 2:30pm. If everyone has finished and has checked in early, the shuttle will leave earlier. You will then get back to Taupo by about 4:30pm.How do I know if the Taupo Return Shuttle is right for me?
If you’re staying in Taupo and don’t have a car, our Taupo to Tongariro return shuttle is the perfect option for you. There is no need to worry about parking at the trailhead, you have a generous 8 hours to complete the hike, and then you can simply relax on your journey back to Taupo.

Easy to find and park, fun driver who drove us to the start. It was easy and affordable if you don't have your own pick up. The return bus went every 10mi.
Superb! They pick you up on time, both at the beginning and end of the trek, and they give you valuable information before starting your trek in Tongariro. The person who picked us up at the end of the trek was incredibly kind! I loved it! 100% recommend it
Was a bit apprehensive about the gps coordinates for the meet up but google maps took us straight there, we were met by a friendly driver who talked us through the trip, and we were picked up and returned to our vehicle at the end of the hike. A fabulous day of great memories and aching muscles. We are both 60+, pretty fit but not massively so and did the walk in a relaxed manner in 7 1/2 hours. Definitely recommend taking poles if only for the scree field down from the top.
The communications were excellent keeping as up to date on weather related conditions. The drivers were good and we didn't have to wait very long for our pick up at
