8 Incredible Things to Do in Tongariro National Park

If you’re looking for adventure, stunning landscapes, and a touch of volcanic magic, Tongariro National Park should be on your radar.

As New Zealand’s oldest national park and UNESCO World Heritage site, it’s packed with incredible hikes, epic ski slopes, and some seriously beautiful views. Sure, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of those epic activities (we might be a touch biased!), but there truly is no shortage of incredible things to do in and around this legendary part of the world.

Where is Tongariro National Park?

Located in the centre of New Zealand's North Island, Tongariro National Park spans approximately 796 km². It's about halfway between Auckland and Wellington, approximately 3.5 hours away from each, making it a very accessible destination from the island's two largest cities.

Why Visit Tongariro National Park?

The park attracts around one million visitors annually, which suggests there is an attraction or two to make a fuss about. Many are drawn by dramatic landscapes, such as the three active volcanoes (Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu) and for others, it's the variety of fantastic outdoor activities. We've shortlisted a few of the best things to do in and near Tongariro National Park to show you why it's worth a visit.

1. Chase Waterfalls at Taranaki Falls

If you love a good waterfall, Taranaki Falls is a must-see. This 6km loop track takes about two hours, winding alongside a stream through a mix of alpine tussock and beech forest. The trail starts near the Whakapapa Visitor Centre and is well-formed with dirt stretches and boardwalks, making it an easy and enjoyable walk. When you reach the falls, you’ll see the water flowing over the edge of an ancient lava flow from Mount Ruapehu’s eruption 15,000 years ago. Along the way, you’ll also spot amazing views of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe (aka Mount Doom from The Lord of the Rings).

2. Snap a Pic at Tawhai Falls

Since we’re on a waterfall kick, Tawhai Falls (yep, the one also known as Gollum’s Pool from The Lord of the Rings) is another spot you’ll want to check out. If you’re short on time or not quite up for a long walk, this 20-minute stroll is perfect and it's not too far from Whakapapa Village. The falls tumble into a lively pool, created by ancient lava flows and surrounded by lush forestry—great for a quick photo op or even a cooling dip. Whether you’re a fan of Middle-earth or just love a good waterfall, this family-friendly track to Tawhai Falls won’t disappoint.

3. Walk the Silica Rapids Track

If you’re after a unique walk, the Silica Rapids Track is a winner. This 7km loop takes about 2.5 hours and highlights some of Tongariro National Park’s most fascinating natural creations. The well-formed trail starts near the Whakapapa Visitor Centre and winds through alpine meadows, lush beech forests, and bubbling streams. Along the way, you’ll pass gushing waterfalls and striking golden-white terraces, created by mineral-rich water flowing over the landscape. The mix of colours and textures makes this an unusual sight, and a great way to experience the park’s unique volcanic environment up close.

4. Hit the Slopes on Mount Ruapehu

When winter rolls in, Tongariro National Park transforms into a snow-filled playground. Mt Ruapehu's two ski areas, Whakapapa and Tūroa, offer terrain for all levels, from gentle learner slopes to epic runs for seasoned skiers and snowboarders. If skiing or snowboarding isn’t your thing, you can still soak up the atmosphere by taking a ride on the Sky Waka Gondola—a must-do for unbelievable views over the volcanic landscape.

5. Cycle the Old Coach Road

Hop on a bike and ride the Old Coach Road, a historic trail stretching 15km from Ohakune to Horopito. Before the railway was completed in 1908, this route was used to transport passengers and goods between two railheads, making it an interesting journey through New Zealand’s rail history. Today, it’s part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail, perfect for a scenic and family-friendly ride through lush native bush and past impressive railway viaducts. Winding along the lower slopes of Mount Ruapehu, this gentle mountain biking trail gives you a rare chance to explore this thriving landscape from a different perspective.

6. Soak in the Ohakune Hot Tubs

After a big day of exploring, there’s nothing better than sinking into a steaming hot tub surrounded by nature. Ohakune Hot Tubs offer private, wood-fired tubs filled with fresh mountain water—no chemicals, just pure relaxation. Tucked away among native trees with epic views of Mount Ruapehu, it’s the perfect spot to soak tired muscles and take it all in. Whether you’ve been hiking, skiing, or just want an excuse to chill out (we don't blame you!), this is a fantastic way to end the day.

7. Rafting with Tongariro River Rafting

Adventure comes in all shapes and sizes in Tongariro, and this particular one comes in the form of a river and a raft with Tongariro River Rafting! The Tongariro River is packed with over 60 rapids, winding through flourishing native bush and dramatic gorges. Along the way, you might even spot a rare blue duck (whio) if you’re lucky. With family-friendly options for a chilled scenic float or an action-packed Grade 3 white-water ride, Tongariro River Rafting has a trip to suit. Prepare for big splashes, unbeatable scenery, and plenty of laughs!
