A Dream That Began Over 25 Years Ago

In 1996, Jared and Mandy began a new adventure, settling in Taupō to start their family. For Jared, Taupō wasn’t just a new home—it was a playground that shaped his childhood, resulting in a great love for the outdoors, from skiing and fishing to hiking.

From Humble Beginnings to Trusted Tour Operators

The journey began with a fishing tour business called "Fish n Trips," which ran for two summers. In the winter season, Jared started taking groups up to the ski fields trips - this ended up being so popular that he invested in a coaster bus to take more passengers up.

With a shiny new coaster on hand, he started thinking of ways to put it to use during the summer months too. At the time, many people stayed in National Park Village and Turangi to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This sparked the idea that maybe Taupō would also make a great base to do this incredible day hike. And he was right! What began as a single Tongariro shuttle service quickly grew into a thriving operation, with the Taupo return shuttle service proving to be very busy...

How Has Tongariro Expeditions Evolved?

The growth of the business started slowly, and then rapidly increased from there. Starting with a single bus and a Pajero to a fleet of 12 buses pre-COVID, by this time, the business had seen immense changes in tourism trends.

The most apparent being that travellers were seeking more independence and to hike with no time limit. Cue the introduction of the flexible Ketetahi one-way shuttle, which changed the experience for hikers, and remains to be the most popular option today! This service proved pivotal during the pandemic, allowing us to cater to locals with their own cars who only needed transport for part of the trip.

But this wasn’t the only way COVID forced us to adapt. With the introduction of non-contact systems, we streamlined our operations, implementing online booking and communication tools. This not only freed us from being tied to the phone but also made it easier to share important information with large groups efficiently.

We complement each other perfectly—Jared is the action man. He’s guided groups, driven the buses, and brought endless laughter to countless visitors. As the logistics expert, he’s always one step ahead of new opportunities and trends. Thanks to his problem-solving skills and strong relationships with local iwi, DOC, accommodators, and booking agents, Jared has been instrumental in evolving and refining Tongariro Expeditions’ services.

Mandy takes Jared’s big ideas and turns them into reality. She works behind the scenes, managing communication, marketing, advertising, accounts, and system development, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Each great at what they do and together, they’ve built a thriving business and managed to stay happily married for over 25 years—a feat in itself!

What Do You Love Most About the Tongariro National Park Region?

Initially, it was the sheer beauty of the landscape and seeing people’s awe as they experienced its dramatic scenery. More recently, it’s the history and cultural significance that have deepened our connection to the area. Being part of the Tongariro National Park story is a privilege we treasure.

The more people understand the sacredness of the land they’re passing through, the better its health and legacy will be preserved for generations to come.

Operating since the 1990s, our longevity is a key part of our story. Tongariro has always been at the heart of our family—our children grew up immersed in it, and we’re proud to see this connection continuing with our grandchildren.

Safety has always been a top priority for us. We live by the motto: we won’t take you up unless we’re prepared to go ourselves. In the early days, we were the only business cancelling trips due to bad weather conditions at the Tongariro Crossing—a practice that has thankfully become industry standard.

As a weather-dependent activity, making the call to cancel can be challenging, but ensuring the safety of our visitors is always worth it. After all, protecting those who entrust us with their experience is our ultimate responsibility.

Can You Share Any Unique Challenges You've Experienced Over The Years?

Over the years, we’ve faced some tough challenges, including the eruption of Te Maari in 2012, the pandemic, and a cancer diagnosis.

When the eruption occurred while we were away, we adapted by offering an alternative hike from the Desert Road until the crossing reopened. During COVID, we downsized to focus on local shuttles, using the time to streamline our business.

Mandy's diagnosis with multiple myeloma was another significant moment, but the timing couldn't have been better. Finding out during the pandemic allowed Mandy to focus on her health and gave her a new outlook on life, which has influenced our business approach—now, we focus on simplicity, clear communication, and ensuring all our visitors feel safe and welcomed.

What Sustainability Initiatives Do You Incorporate and How Do You Encourage Visitors to Reduce Their Environmental Impact?

When we are efficient with our scheduling, we are being sustainable as more users of our transport means more cars off the road. This is even more significant for the people who choose our return shuttle services, especially from Taupo, as this reduces the number of cars entering the National Park.

We’re also proud members of Project Tongariro, sponsoring an acre for pest control and pine tree eradication to support local environmental initiatives.

To encourage visitors to minimise their impact, we provide a map and information sheet that outline how to care for themselves and the maunga during their hike. This includes a statement from Ngāti Hikairo, emphasising the area's cultural and historical significance, inspiring visitors to act as kaitiaki (guardians) of this remarkable environment.

What is the Best Spot Along the Tongariro Alpine Crossing?

There are so many incredible spots and views and a Tongariro sunrise is something very special. We always encourage people to pause, look back at how far they’ve come, and take in the sight of Mt Taranaki on the horizon. But for us, the lakes steal the show every time! The colours are absolutely otherworldly—truly mind-blowing and you never get used to them!

Advice for First-Time Hikers Doing The Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Jared and Mandy’s top tip? Do your research! Not only physically prepare for the Tongariro Crossing, but also take the time to understand the cultural and historical significance of the area. Respect the maunga’s wairua (spirit) by following local protocols, being aware of the sacred areas such as the lakes and peaks, and leave everything as you found it, ensuring an enriching and respectful experience.
